Electrotherapies
Beacons View Veterinary Physiotherapy currently offers PMFT, red and blue light phototherapy, therapeutic ultrasound and TENS/NMES.
Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy
PMFT transmits a non-heating, non-invasive magnetic field into target tissue, inducing a small electrical current. These currents aid in several therapeutic effects including vasodilation, optimisation of the inflammatory process (and therefore enhanced tissue repair), oedema and pain reduction. It is also widely used for osteoarthritis, and for non-union fracture in bone repair.
Laser phototherapy
Laser phototherapy uses blue, infrared and visible red light applied using high intensity light emitting diodes. This light energy is transferred to the target tissue and alters the chemical structure within the cells of the tissue. Different colour lasers have different uses and depths of penetration, with blue phototherapy being useful in treating infected or dirty wounds, mud fever and rainscald in horses, while infrared and visible red can penetrate deeper into the tissue enhancing wound repair, increasing circulation and also reducing muscle spasm in conjunction with manual treatment. Red light phototherapy has also been successfully used alongside veterinary treatment of muscle, tendon and ligament strains.
